tax information

This page explains how tax works on SAJA in plain language. It is general information, not tax advice: for your situation, talk to a tax professional.

sales tax

SAJA does not currently charge sales tax on pack purchases. The price you see is the price you pay.

That is possible because your cards are purchased and stored in Oregon, a state with no sales tax. As long as a card stays in your vault, it sits in Oregon.

if you ship a card to yourself

Shipping a card to a state that does charge sales tax can change the picture: some states treat goods bought tax-free elsewhere and brought in as subject to their sales or use tax. Where that applies, reporting and paying it may be up to you. Check your state's rules if you are unsure.

money you make

Selling cards back, vendor offers, and other payouts can be taxable income or capital gains depending on your situation. United States tax law generally requires you to report income even when no tax form is issued for it.

tax forms

Payouts run through Stripe. Where the law requires it, you may receive a tax form (for example a 1099) for a year's payouts, and the information you provided during identity or payout setup is what those forms use. Keep your details accurate.

keep your own records

Your withdrawal history lives in Cash Out, and your sale history lives on each card. Screenshots and statements are worth keeping if you sell frequently: cost basis (what you paid) matters when working out gains.
